In keeping with Capitalist Forum's pursuit of profiling people who have taken the chance and the challenge to locate their successful companies in New Mexico-in this case in Santa Fe- we bring you a very rare chance to listen and ask questions to just such a man. We are all proud to have OUTSIDE Magazine headquartered in Santa Fe.
We all were here the night Sam Pick one of our most successful mayors addressed us and profiled as one of his administration's proudest victories; Larry Burke and OUTSIDE Magazine re-locating to Santa Fe.

Lawrence Burke was born in 1942 in Chicago, Ill. After graduating from Notre Dame high School he headed west to attend the University of Arizona in Tucson. He earned a degree in Marketing /Economics and while married to his first wife had their daughter Christine in 1965. Lawrence did post graduate work in Finance at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania while working for IBM Corporation in Sales and Marketing in Denver, Colo.
Lawrence left IBM after 2/12 years to spend some time in Europe which would eventually lead to his lifelong passion for travel and journalism. He spent almost five years traveling much of the world and as he sailed home to America in 1973, spending 10 months in the Caribbean, the concept of adventure as a literary pursuit blossomed in full.
Mr. Burke returned to Chicago where he went to work for his Grandfather's display company to support himself while he spent nights and weekends developing and refining his concept for a new kind of outdoor magazine covering a contemporary view of the world outside.
The magazine was titled Mariah (as in "they call the wind Mariah").The first issue was published in February of 1976 and came out as a quarterly. In 1978 Mr. Burke bought out a rival publication titled Outside from the publishers of Rolling Stone and merged the two titles into one keeping the name Outside.
The magazine went on to win 17 straight nominations and General Excellence awards becoming the only magazine in history to win the highest award in publishing three years in a row.
Outside is published by Mariah Media Inc. and today has over 2 million readers every month.
The company also publishes three Special Issues devoted to travel and an Annual Buyers Guide. In addition the company's website,Outside Online is an award winning Adventure Travel Website based in Washington D.C.
Outside Television, based in the company's Chicago office is a developer and producer of programming for Network and Cable television.
Outside Shows and Events is a producer of Live Entertainment also based in Chicago.
Outside Books publishes Guidebooks, Novelty Books and Anthology's in partnership with W.W. Norton of New York City.
Mariah Media Inc. relocated it's headquarters from Chicago to Santa Fe New Mexico in 1995.
Mr. Burke and his wife Gabrielle are competitive western riders in the National Reining Horse Association with affiliates in all 50 states and many foreign countries. They compete throughout the west and have won numerous Championships. The Burke's raise their horses at Mariah Ranch in Santa Fe county and maintain their level of performance after two years of professional training in Texas, Arizona and California.
Mr. Burke is a member and significant supporter and contributor to the Humane Society of the USVI; he is also a Sponsor of the USVI Miss America Pageant and a member of the St. Thomas Yacht Club. He is an avid tennis player, windsurfer and novice surfer.
